Success Stories: European Bowls Championships 2022

What a sensational performance from Team Ireland at the Europeans in Ayr! Our bowlers returned home with an incredible five medals—three golds, one silver, and one bronze.

The coveted titles went to:

🥇Gary Kelly (Men’s Singles)

🥇 Ashley Rainey, Lara Reaney, Chloe Wilson (Ladies Triples)

🥇 Aaron Tennant, Mark Wilson, Gary Kelly (Men’s Triples)

🥈 Sarah Kelly, Shauna O’Neill (Ladies Pairs)

🥉 Aaron Tennant, Stuart Bennett, Stephen Kirkwood, Mark Wilson (Men’s Fours)

As squad captain Ashley Rainey reflected: “To see everyone return home with a medal is one of my proudest moments and showed the hard work paid off.”

“The experience was amazing. The team had a great mix of youth and experience and really gelled from day one. Personally to become European champion with two of my great friends is something I will treasure for a long time.”

The new competition format provided a fresh challenge, but the Irish stars rose to it. “We had to grind out some tough results in the group stages. The semi-final of the triples will live long in my memory because the three of us played perfectly as a team. We were down but fought back to win the last 6 ends and finish so strongly.”

Rainey praised the impact of the support staff too: “SINI (Sports Institute Northern Ireland) provides us with the tools to make the marginal gains, and the HPT (High Performance Team) have been amazing. The support they both provide on and off the green is invaluable. This has definitely been the difference, particularly in the women’s game, to helping our success.”

Her advice for aspiring bowlers? “Always give 110% on and off the green. Use all the tools available to become a better version of yourself. Most importantly is to make sure you are a team player. There is no better feeling than sharing success together.”

An incredible European Championships for Irish Bowls! Well done to all involved in this monumental achievement.

The next European Bowls Championships are scheduled for September 3-8, 2024. Can Team Ireland replicate their success? Follow our page for all the build-up!
