Commonwealth Games – Final day update

Northern Ireland went into the final day of competition knowing they had one medal in the bag with the men’s Fours and a potential second with Gary Kelly involved in the last 4 of the men’s singles.

First up was the men’s singles, with Gary taking on Malaysia. After a slow start, Gary took control of the game, and he ran out a convincing 21-14 winner. This set up a gold medal match with Gold Coast Winner Aaron Wilson from Australia.

The Men’s Fours faced India in the Gold Medal match. From the start, they dominated the opposition, with the front end of Sam Barkley and Adam McKeown producing 5-star performances. They were ably supported by the experienced backend of Ian McClure and Marty McHugh, and they secured a comfortable 17-8 win. This is Northern Ireland’s first Gold in lawn bowls since 1998.

The final game of the lawn bowls competition was the gold medal match in the Men’s Singles. Gary Kelly was under pressure from the outset with Aaron Wilson in scintillating form. In the end, Wilson secured a 21-3 win. While Gary will be disappointed with the final, he can hold his head high, securing a Silver medal in the blue riband event.

Overall the 2022 Commonwealth Games have been a great success for the Northern Ireland team. To secure 6 quarter finalists out of a possible 8 events is a great achievement, and to convert this into 1 gold and 1 silver was outstanding. The most important aspect is the development of the ladies’ team into a potential force to be reckoned with in the future. It was also somewhat disappointing that some negative commentary was made in relation to this progress of the young ladies team, but hopefully, the future is bright despite these individual opinions.
