Commonwealth Games – Day 5 update

It was a day of very mixed results for the Northern Ireland team on Day 5 of the Commonwealth Games in Leamington Spa.

The day started early with Sam Barkley and Marty McHugh contesting the bronze medal match against the top Scottish pair of Paul Foster and Alex Marshall. Sadly it was not to be for the NI pair with Foster and Marshall running out easy winners.

The second stage of the competition also began with Ladies Pairs, Ladies Triples, Men’s Singles and Men’s Fours.

The Ladies Pair of Megan Devlin and Shauna O’Neill opened their campaign against a very strong English Pair. The game was of top quality and went to the wire with England securing a 14-13 win with the last bowl of the match. They resume tomorrow with their second game against Scotland.

The Ladies Triple of Ashleigh Rainey, Courtney Meneely and Chloe Wilson were the success story of the day securing 2 wins against the Falkland Islands and a strong South African triple. They are in a good position to qualify for the quarter finals and could secure that berth with a win against Singapore tomorrow.

Gary Kelly, the singles representative opened with a tricky first game against the Norfolk Islands. Gary produced a very solid display to win comfortably 21-12. His next opponent is the Gold medalist in the pairs Daniel Salmon of Wales.

The Men’s Fours played what was their pivotal group game against Canada but unfortunately they finished on the wrong side of a 13-12 scoreline. This will make qualification difficult as they complete their group games tomorrow and Thursday against Nuie and Australia needing to win both.
